Dark circles that develop beneath the eyes and can affect both men and women of varying ages. Their appearance generally shows a darkening of the skin from the bottom corner of the lower lid that may progress towards the cheek. A number of factors can contribute to this concern which may arise from genetics, ageing and lifestyle.
Dark circles that are attributed to ageing are typically due to thinning skin. The skin around the eyes is already delicate in nature, which is enhanced when collagen and elastin starts to deplete. This results in an increased chance of the blood vessels becoming more visible on the surface and creating a darker tone to the skin. Ageing skin around the eyes also becomes weaker and less able to support the underlying structure, causing the fat pads to shift. As they fall toward the cheeks, this can cause some hollow areas (known as tear troughs) and puffiness beneath the lower lid (eye bags). These factors together can lead to shadows forming, giving the appearance of a dark circle.

Lack of hydration and irritation are other factors to consider in the development of this concern which can either contribute to the thinning of skin (lack of fluid), or dilated blood vessels (from rubbing itchy or irritated eyes). In these instances dark circles can be temporary and easily resolved. However, when genetics play their part, darker skin beneath the eyes is usually permanent. Some ethnicities such as Arabic, Turkish, Hispanic and Greek will often appear to have dark circles beneath the eyes from childhood which is thought to be linked to bone structure.
